whats the best way to record off a Hills freeview reciever?

HI,

I have a hills freeview box, and wanting to record one channel while watching another.

I have called the hills team, and was advised to use a usb storage drive, so I went and bought a 16 GB stick, which they said it had to hold at least,only to find that it skips, and stops.

so, Im assuming a hard drive is the next best thing?Im not really wanting to buy a freeview recorder box because of the expense.

I dont know anything about this, so products and names of drives would be helpful? and how to connect them up, how to record and if it will record one channel while watching another,

Get an external hard drive with its own power pack
And some channel combinations are unworkable on a 1 tuner box

I see from your profile you have a Veon TV. What model is it? I was under the impression all Veon TVs have Freeview built in so I wondered why you need a decoder box. If it does have Freeview built in then you can record from the Hills' USB output and watch another channel using the TV's built in tuner.

If you really want good recording and record two at once while watching a third then IMHO a Pansonic recorder + Freeview TV is the only way to go. From what I've read on forums nearly all STB's with USB record are a recipe for problems. My Panasonic Recorder plus Sony TV have never given me any problems and the Panasonic Recorder was well woth the extra cost. With STB's the quality is reflected in their price.

As Willis said, if using USB record then an external HDD plus it's own external Power Supply is virtually essential.

pc world s top 3 hdd are adata,seagate,western digital in no particular order

veon would almost certainly have a hd tuner as only came out a few years ago [or well after 2008]

if the tv doesnt want to know about tv freq 28,32,34,36 give it a factory reset as may have been set to some other countrrys setting by mistake

The veon tv uses the signal coming from the box because the UHF aerial on my roof isnt working for some reason.

I might call Hills again to see what they reccomend, but I'll also look up those brands you suggested Willis.

What is an STB?

and when you say an external power supply do you mean a plug to the wall?

A stb is set top box aka freeview box
External powered hard drive does plug into the wall
And on your profile states uhf aerial and hills box with T in the model no terrestial/aerial

the acid test of aerial vs satellite is in your case if youre getting ch 40 canterbury tv then is definitely aerial

if no ctv but shine tv is on ch 25 then definitely satellite

as for hard drives wouldnt ask hills ,more likely dick smith,harvey norman etc

That doesn't make sense. If your UHF aerial isn't working then the Hills STB wouldn't be decoding and showing pictures on the TV. Therefore if the aerial is connected to the TV as well as the Hills box then it must also receive Freeview. How have you connected the aerial leads?

I think you definitely need to get an installer to sort it out.

P.S. If you want an external HDD look at PBTech or Playtech online and check with pricespy. Computer stores are usually a lot cheaper than Major Retail stores.
