The recommended dish elevation for my location is 44.4Deg. Trying this I get no signal. Looking at most dishes in the area they all appear to be at an elevation of around 23deg???? and they work.
So I tried this and it works. So why is the recommendation for around 45deg
Cheers

Where on earth are you measuring from? The elevation markings should be written on the side.
Elevation is the angle of the horizon that the satellite sits at. The dish is normally offset .
Because the dishes have the LNB offset and not at the central focal point. That's why they seem to be at quite a different angle. Think of the Dish as a mirror. If the dish is at around 15 degrees then the LNB will be looking at around 45 degrees. If the LNB was at the Central point then the dish would be at 44.4deg.
All dishes I've seen have the calibration marks on the side of the mount and are appropriate to the offset of the LNB.
