This morning all channels were pixelating and the sound breaking up.  Both signal strength and quality read 10/10.  Just to be sure, I went on the roof and checked the aerial which hasn't moved from its ideal position.  Both aerial and cable are 3 months old.  I am in the South Wairarapa about 10km from the Tx.

I tried re-tuning and checking the aerial connections at both ends.  Could it be a Freeview problem or is my tuner playing up?  Thanks

Hi Ian

I have just checked the reports from the transmission  providers on the forum and it looks like there is no Freeview issues.

From what you have said, Pixelation on a signal of 10/10 is probably a unit issue with your Panasonic recorder, however can you tell me how long you have had Freeview for, you have said that cables and aerial have recently been installed.

Cheers

We have been using Freeview for about 3 months.  The recorder is about 18 months old, but not used until we got rid of Sky 3 months ago.  (We got MySky and never used it)

Seeing as you are 10km away from the transmission site, Is there a clear line of sight?  Ensuring that the path is not blocked by any trees, buildings etc...

My other option is to test another unit to see if the issue is the Panasonic or your setup

There is a stand of bush 200m from the house but the TX is behind a handy gap in the trees.  The aerial is a Triple folding Structure  exactly like the second item down on this page  http://www.freeviewshop.co.nz/aerial-guide-i-49.html

I went up un the roof and it is still pointing exactly at the gap in the trees, so there is nothing different there..  I did notice the quality bar occasionally drops down to 9/10 which I never noticed before.  Would that drop be enough to cause pixilation?

Do you have a TV with it built in connect as well - you will be able to pixilation on that as well if it is the result or poor signal , if you are very close to the Transmitter it may be overloading the tuner in the Panasonic , you can check this by backing out the plug from the aerial at the back of the Panasonic , if there is too much signal you will still be able to get a signal with the plug a few mm's out of the socket - this may demonstrate if the levels are too high cheers

No, I only have an analogue TV.  I did take the recorder to Noel Leemings in Masterton and they put it on their aerial and it worked fine, so the unit is OK.    I will try your suggestion of pulling the plug out part way.

It worked!  signal 8/10  quality 6/10  and NO pixilation.  Now where can I buy an attenuator to fix the problem permanently?   And why has it been fine until today?

Oops  reverse the signal and quality numbers...

Excellent to hear , without knowing what your levels are it is tricky to guess but in an ideal situation the signal level is delivered to the input at an ideal range , it could also been a signal that is not wanted i.e. not one of the DTT muxes and by pulling the plug slightly this will also reduce this as well , you may have a varying signal strength or the signals have recently increased ie a tree has been cut down in the path , it the antenna powered (ie built in amp) or is it just a passive antenna

Aerial is strictly passive.  I am ordering a set of in-line attenuators off TradeMe so see if that fixes it permanently.  If I just moved the aerial off line a few degrees, would that do the same job?  (I don't want to leave the aerial lead sort of hanging there for the next week, it's bound to fall out in the middle of something the wife is watching!)

a 6dB one should be ok

make sure you specify belling lee [normal aerial socket] or f type connectors

Doing that with the plug or adding an attenuator is showing there is an issue with a higher signal coming in than the front end can cope with , UHF tends to layer and vary with location , it reflects and gets absorbed by things in and around the signal path , without test gear you wont know what exactly is causing it , but if an attenuator fixes it for the purposed that it work glitch free then that is great. Let me know how you go
