We have an older (much loved)  TV, thats works well, but only has the aerial input that we use a VCR on.Remember VCR's? We have heaps of VCR tapes for the grandbabies.

Does anyone know of a Freeview receiver that has an output that can be connected via the aerial input?

We have 2 boxes setup for satellite and a installer is coming in a few days to try and get our UHF aerial working. When we had it installed the installer said he couldn't get a good enough signal, for the UHF and installed the  satellite, which we don't feel is very good.

Thanks

Ian

What are the make and model of your 2 satellite receivers ?

Also what is the make and model of your TV.

If the either (STB) = (Satellite or UHF receiver)  has an RF output then you can easily connect them via your VCR.

The black coax cable feeds from the RF out of your STB to the RF Input of your VCR then to the Aerial Input of your TV.

Many STB's have RF outputs , so it can be done.

Freeview UHF/ HD  will look exactly the same as SD Satellite Freeview  unless you update your TV.

Hi Paul.

The 2 we have are both, government issue Hills HSMX-200's.

The bedroom TV is a Black Diamond TV that we bought some 24-25 years ago and works well.

We used to have an al-cheep-o DVD player into the telly, via the VCR, but was hoping there is na Freeview decoder that can be attached via the aerial.

Hey Ian,

What Paul said!

To be honest though, why don't you just use the VCR for watching your VHS tapes and get a MyFreeview so you can use that to record TV - so much easier than trying to connect your VCR to a receiver then in turn to a TV....

And just a word of caution - have you checked your coverage on http://www.freeviewnz.tv/coverage.aspx?  Make sure you do before you attempt to get Freeview|HD - if your result is Likely or Likely with High Aerial, you will need to get a high-gaine UHF aerial and get it well-elevated to get reliable reception.  If it's Unlikely, would recommend sticking with the satellite.

Thanks for the comments and I agree, if it works we'll connect via VCR and recording is easier too.

What had problems getting the UHF to work on Freeview abd installer put up a dish and had to run a cable for another.

But we still have 2 telleys left and someone is coming to check the UHF out, thanks to the landlord.

Hi Ian

The Hills HSMX-200 doesn't have an RF Input / Output , even know the manual says it does, you could connect the HSMX-200 via your VCR as you did with the DVD.

The Hills HSMX-200 is a PVR which means it can record to a Flash drive or external hard-drive.So that would be a viable option.

If you want to buy a Satellite receiver that does have an RF output then the  Veon Sat 101 or Dish TV S7070r ,will do the job.

Veon Sat 101 $79.00  available here

DishTV S7070r $79.00 - $139.00 available here

The Veon is a clone of the DIshTV  but has a 2 year warranty  , so I know which I would be buying.

I personally own a Veon Sat 101 & DishTV S7070r so can vouch for them being almost identical. The DishTV has slightly better build quality.

Buy connecting, do you mean with the Video/audio connections?

I feel it annoying what the government has done, with TV.

Lots of people have multiple TV, that just needed an aerial connection, now we either have to buy a new TV or decoder.

So they gets heaps of money in two way.

1. The GST, and.

Selling the frequencies the TV used to use, as I understand they are being used for 4G.

Am I wrong????

Your not wrong ;)

Yes you could connect the hills via the Vcr using Video /Audio Inputs (Composite) on the VCR then the RF output connect to TV, not ideal but would work , catch is you need the Vcr on to watch Freeview .

You can split the RF Output on Freeview Boxs that have an RF Out and feed the signal to multiple TV's / Vcr's etc , You can only watch the same channel on all TV's tho.

This is how I have setup all of our Freeview Boxs , plus they are also connect via Composite to the Main Lounge TV.

We have 3 boxs in total all tuned to different Channels (Which is Feed to 3 TV's & 4 Vcrs & Panasonic Hard drive Recorder)

Box 1  is tuned to Channel 1

Box 2 is tuned to Channel 2

Box 3 is tuned to Channel 3

With UHF / HD its less of a problem if you have a UHF aerial installed and TV's with freeview built in , but as you have said this all costs money.

In Marlborough its Freeview Satellite or Sky , we cannot receive Freeview HD / UHF and never will at least you have a choice.

Your cheapest option is to buy a couple of Flash drives and record directly to them.

An 8 GB flash drive will give you 3-4 hours of recording time, the larger the flash drive the more content it can store.

Hope I haven't lost you .

No, sounds good.

Only problem is I have tried to record to a flash drive and tried to play back on computer, but doesn't work.

I have the latest codex's and use Microsoft's default and Video Lan.

Also tried to record off I recorded and play back on another and that don't work neither.

At the moment we have an 85 GB external hard drive connected to the lounge TV and that works good.

I can play back  recorded content from my DishTV and Veon on pc via  Klite codec pack and  Media player Classic.

My neighbours have Hills HSMX-200 and I wasn't able to playback content from there box either on my Pc.

I'm not sure why you cant move the flash drive from one box to the other , if they are identical. (possibly different firmware )

Thanks.

Am downloading the Klite codec pack and I try that

I have solution your initial comment, the tv in the bedroom has only the aerial input??? no av conection???

Go to your local recyclers and you can pick a free TV of your choice and  no problem with multiple av inputs/outputs.

Thanks :)
