Hi, wondering if anybody had any tips or ideas on the following problem.

Had satellite freeview installed about 18 months ago and all working fine till about 2 weeks ago.

We are now getting problems with reception of Group One channels (TV1, TV2, Maori, etc). Either picture freezing or even "No Signal" message comes up.
Channels on other groups (TV3, Prime, etc) are fine.

Retuned the set-top box and all channels are tuned to the correct settings, for example:
Optus D1 12483MHz 22500sps H (for TV1, TV2, etc...).
TV1 - Video PID = 0513 Audio PID = 0651

Went up on roof and checked satellite dish for movement. It was very securely fastened so I dont think any wind or anything would have moved it.

Does anybody have any ideas on what we can check or what may be causing this.


PS: We found temporary workaround for TV2 via SKyTVs unscrambled broadcast of TV2 on 12672MHz. Couldnt find one for TV1 though.

What are  your signal and strength meters like on TV1 ?

Your LNB in the middle of the dish may need it's skew to be adjusted. That is the angle of the plastic receiver in the middle of the dish. When your dish was installed, there were less signals on the satellite. Now here are more including ones on the opposite polarisation to the channels that contains TV1, etc. Unless the skew is perfect, these channels will be interfered with and not be received clearly.

If you can get to your dish safely, it is relatively easy to adjust. There are usually two screws that hold the LNB in place by screwing through a plastic saddle. If you loosen these a little and try tweaking the skew a few degrees in each direction to maximise the quality reading in the tuning menu, you will solve the issue.

Receiving one transponder and not another is often caused by the "skew" of the LNB being slightly out. The skew is set by twisting the LNB around in it's holder - It's a very critical setting and different brands of LNB have a different skew point - But normally you would get this problem soon after an LNB or dish has been serviced, not after about 18 months of trouble-free operation.

But, we also get this problem every Spring when all the leaves start growing on the trees! So, since it just started in the last two weeks, I think you'll find that your problem will be a leaf on a tree blocking out the signal from that one transponder. - Yes, one leaf will cause the problem!

- So check for any foilage within about 2 to 15 metres from the dish - Stand behind the dish with your arm up at about 45 degrees (like a "nazi" salute) in the direction of the dish arm, then look along your arm for any branch in the way.

Paul: The on screen display when changing channels indicates signal strength of around 80% for all channels.

Mike G and Bill: No foliage etc in path of dish. But as suggested we will get back up on roof and try adjusting the LNB position. We have no meter so just trial and error with shouting back and forth if theres any on screen improvement. :-)

Joshua: Prime is fine. Not sure what you are saying.

What is the make model of your STB (Satellite receiver) ?

On my  DishTV S7070r you can see the Signal and Quality meters by pressing the INFO button , which still shows the channel you are watching .

This helps as you can see any fluctuation on the meters.
