Hi Guys,

Well, it has happened. I brought my TV (Samsung Smart TV 40 inch) from US and noticed that the frequencies are different and I can not get channels unless I have a kind of tuner? Would a Freeview (aerial ones) do the job or I need a dish and receiver to watch NZ channels.

P.S: I have sorted the voltage issue by a small transformer!

Cheers,

Hank

Hi Hank

USA TV's are not compatible with NZ Freeview Frequencies and because the TV is a NTSC version it will not work with PAL broadcasts and set top boxes here in NZ, I am unsure if there is a NTSC to PAL converter to convert the signals from the box to the TV.

You will need to check at freeviewnz.tv/coverage to see what you can get, it will tell you if you need a Aerial or Dish or if the results turn out as both then look at the Aerial option.

Thanks for the info Josh. I checked the coverage and apparently I can use a UHF aerial.

As for the Freeveiw, I saw a post that someone who brought their UK TV could get the channels by Freeview (only by connecting HDMI cable) but not sure it that is applicable as HDMI wont convert signals.

I think alternately I may get one of this and use it with freeview to convert PAL to NTSC

What do you think?

Unless your TV is multi System (NTSC, PAL etc) you would need to use a convertor such as the one in your link as well as a STB or PVR. Your better option though would be to just go and buy a NZ model TV. Much less hassle.

NTSC is gone The US uses ATSC now, but it still won't work. You should be able to connect a STBox to the HDMI input.

+1

Yeah. I realised that when I gave it some further thought. Old analogue thinking catching up with me. Most new TVs still have analogue tuners and are multi system so yes, it should work if a NZ STB or Recorder  is connected to HDMI. Basically it's only use in NZ is as a Monitor.

My Sony TV works OK with NTSC type input signals from DVD etc.

Thanks John,

By STBox you mean a Freeview box? sorry not familiar here with terminology. Is Freeview considered a STBox? If yes, I just need to make sure that the Freeview that I am getting has HDMI?

Cheers

A STB is a Set Top Box which has a Terrestrial or Satellite Freeview receiver which can be connected to a Tv that doesn't have an inbuilt Freeview UHF or Sat receiver. HDMI is the normal connection to a TV but they may also have Composite or Component Video output connectors for use with older TV sets. Checkout the Resources Tab at the top of this page to get all the info you will ever need about Freeview NZ.

Please post the tv make and model number so we can check what it is capable of.

most likely it will work just as a display monitor once you plug in a set top freeview receiver
