I have a direct line of sight to Mt Kaukau, probably about 2K away.  I find that my digital TV seems to work fine without any antenna or dish connected.

Does anyone know if picture quality would be even better if I hooked up  an indoor/outdoor UHF aerial?

You can check signal strength and quality using your TV's menu but if you already have a perfect picture (signal 100 quality 1000 then it can't be improved further. All an outdoor antenna will do is stop any glitches due to people moving about near the TV and possible interference. I'd still recommend an outdoor antenna though. I have direct line of sight to Waiatarua and get a perfect picture with a small bit of wire stuck in the antenna socket but I still use an outdoor antenna. I also use a splitter to connect my Recorder and PC tuner so an outdoor antenna is virtually a necessity to avoid any problems. And a dish doesn't work on a TV as it doesn't have a satellite tuner. Has to be a UHF antenna.
