Streaming - very poor picture quality

I'm new to Freeview streaming services having recently purchased a SmartVU dongle. I was disappointed to see that the picture quality was quite poor on some live channels, TV3 and associated channels in particular. Is this just the way it is?

Also, is 5.1 audio available on any of the Freeview live channels?
