Sudden "Weak or No Signal" issue in Auckland/Remuera area [SOLVED]

Hi:

I live in St Johns, Auckland, in a pretty low / bad signal reception area for Freeview HD.  However, the TV installed/technicial tuned our aerial towards the Remuera transmitter (on vertical polarity), and also installed a powered amplifier, and it works for us - most (almost all the time actually) signal is acceptable, with the occassional pixellartion, which I can live with.

However, suddenly, last Thursday, we suddenly started receiving "Weak or No Signal".  I checked the amplifier and it still appears to have power, and definitely wouldn't work without it - we've tried before.  Looking through my TV's menu for the signal reception, I see no signal at all - the signal bars stayed at 0 - in the past without the amplifier I usually get something, though it wasn't strong enough for a proper reception.  But now, nothing...

Therefore, I'm just wondering has there been any issues with reception in the Auckland area, particularly in the East side, specifically around the Remuera/Meadowbank/St Johns area?  Coincidentally, the problems started last week when the really cold front started coming in - not sure if it is connected or not.  It could still be due to the amplifier giving way, but I doubt it - as I mentioend in the past without the amplifer I will still get some signal - in the range of 10-20, but no there is nothing, 0, with or without the amplifier.

Any ideas anyone..?

Thanks.

Cheers

Hey Chuck

There are a few things you can do to check if there are any issues at your house, currently there were or are currently no network issues reported by the transmission providers in your area so I suspect the issue is related to your house

  1. Check to see if there are any loose cables, overtime they can become disconnected from what needs to work and usually it's just a case of checking and correcting any loose cables. this can be from the set top box or TV to the UHF aerial and everything in between.
  2. Check to see there are no environmental issues between your UHF aerial and the transmission  site this could be construction, traffic, trees, buildings or an environment where there could be a lot of interference with other network bands. If your line of sight is clear and uninterrupted then follow the next step
  3. Your UHF aerial due to the weather conditions might have aligned itself off a little from the transmitter, the slightest of margin can affect your whole reception levels, check to see if the UHF aerial is tight and secure, ensure it is not wobbling or moving and the screws from the stand are secured and not rusty.
  4. If you still are having issues consult the installer you has this installed as he is responsible for the installation and could check everything to see what has changed last week.

I hope this information helps, please let us know how you get on so we can troubleshoot further

Kind Regards, Joshua

Hi Joshua:

Thanks for your very detaild message, and my apologies for a late late reply.

I did the checks you mentioned, and also waited a a wee while to see if any environmental factors would correct itself, but to no avail. Eventually, I contacted our landlord who got the TV Aerial guy out - he has been out before and we knew our place is always tricky as it is ih a very poor reception area.  Anyway, the Aerial Technician did some checks, and out that not only our aerial needs replacing (it's probably way past its "use by date"..., he also moved the aerial to another part of the roof to get a stronger signal.

TV Reception is now back, and it has never been this good before.

All in a great outcome - hopefully I won't have anymore aerial/reception issues in the next wee while.

Thanks again for your help.

Cheers

Chuck
