Hi I have just purchased a 1m diameter satellite dish off trademe and would really appreciate some help as this is something that I am not knowledgeable about!
I live in Woolston and have had no joy with getting reception even with a big traditional aerial as I have no view of the sugarloaf transmitter.
I have a main TV with freeview and want to split the signal to a 2nd non freeview TV.
The Satellite dish I have has the following LNBF on it:
Ku - band LNBF KD016 input11.7 - 12.8GHZ
L.O. 10.75GHZ.
Will this dish work?
Is this Ok?? Do I just hook it up and split the cable to the 2nd non freeview TV and get a digital receiver for it? Is there any particular type to get?
I know nothing about this stuff and would be extremely grateful for any advice from a knowledgeable person:)
Thanks James

Hi James
Thanks for getting in touch and to let us know you are using Freeview with a 1m Satellite dish, That means that you will hardly get rain-fade or interference because you are using a larger dish,
From what you have provided you will be able to set up freeview for this, and with approved receivers it may pick up your LNB Frequency automatically.
From your Freeview Box RF Output you will need to run a cable from the box to a splitter then split the cables to the other TV's this method means that only your 2 TVS can only view the channel on your single freeview box,
Do you other Satellite Boxes or only just the TV's ?
Kind Regards
Joshua
By "big traditional aerial" I presume you mean a large VHF aerial? That certainly won't work. You need a UHF antenna, good quality coax and probably a masthead amp. Looking at the coverage map for Sugarloaf it seems about half the Woolston are is unlikely to get UHF. Depending on where you are in Woolston you should be able to receive UHF. Have you checked your address here?

Failing that the dsh you have should work OK but you'll probably need a professional installer to set it up as you will need to know how to mount it with correct azimuth and elevation and also a satellite finder to fine tune the signal.
If you get a professional installer they will be able to tell you firstly if you can get UHF and secondly they can install the dish correctly.
Hi Joshua, Thanks very much for your reply. I don't have any boxes yet, just two TVs that don't work;) I am wondering what boxes I would need? I now just have a big dish and two Tvs-1 with built in freeview in my lounge and 1 without built in freeview in a bedroom. I have run cable up to where the satellite dish is going, and from the 2nd tv in the bedroom to the lounge where the cables comes in from the satellite dish. I am just not sure what boxes I need to buy now.
It is great news that you think that satellite dish will work. So now I just need to work out how to set it all up:)
Cheers, James

Hi Biggles, Thanks very much for your reply. The site said "likely with a high aerial" for UHF. I got a new one and it is up as high as it can go and the Tv says the signal is very weak and it freezes constantly.
The coax is all new and good quality but I don't have a masthead amp.
I agree that it is probably best to get a professional installer in to advise me. I have this dish now and am hoping it will work ok. All my neighbours seem to be using a dish so I will try and get it going using this first.
I have a built in freeview tv in the loungue and a bedroom tv with no built in freview so am wondering what box/setup I would need to purchase for them to be running independently of each other.
Cheers James

Hi James
Sounds like you are in real fringe territory for UHF and a masthead amp may or may not work. Hence the need for a pro with a signal meter to see if there is sufficient strength available somewhere on your roof. Just moving antenna location about on the roof by a few feet can produce significant variation in signal strength at UHF. Would be worth perservering with the UHF as the picture quality is so much better than satellite.
For independent via satellite viewing you'll need two STBs and either use a splitter to feed the line from the dish to each box or if one box has in and out sockets they could be 'daisy chained'. You may still need a pro though to get accurate alignment and setup.
Only other option is to move house.

Haha yes moving would be easier. I will check out the VHF option further and failing that will get 2 satellite receivers and put one in each room after splitting the feed. Thanks very much for your help today. I appreciate it.

I think you mean UHF. There is no VHF TV any more.
