hi there we have been without transmission for freeview since sunday night 13th july since the wind kicked up here in hawera sth taranaki.  Have spoken to all my neighbours and fb friends in the area regarding their reception and them too have nothing.  Some have dishes and some aerials.  Into day 3 now and was told ice is on the antenna and had to wait til it melted or check out own aerial.  This is the whole town im referring too as have talked to more today.  Im pretty sure the wind would  have either blown the aerial over or it needs realigning so no one is looking into this.  Not good considering this is the holidays and tv is a must for bad weather.  Not a good start considering going digital in september.  please please send a technician up there to sort this.  People in the town get irate over this.

Multiple posts on net the were on this, appears to have been restored as of this morning. No Outage was reported by the Transmission provider !!.

Hey Fran, sorry about the delay in responding - had to check this out so I could come back to you with the right info:

Firstly, it's important to make the distinction between folks using a dish & those using a UHF aerial - satellite transmission isn't regionalised so if there was a problem with the transmission, then it would be a nationwide issue & so far that does not appear to be the case (which is good) - so please let the ones using a dish to receive digital TV among your friends & whanau know that it's most likely to do with the dish (its positioning might not be ideal; or the LNB component has suffered water damage over the years) - a replacement of the LNB (relatively cheap to buy) or a repositioning could well be the ticket.

Now those who have had problems using UHF aerials would've been affected by the ice on the transmission tower (on Mt Egmont) but there are 2 parts to this problem:

  • One being the ice (Granted, that ice did take its sweet time to melt...though I'm not sure what poor souls would've been dispatched to scale the snowy slopes...and when they got there...what could one do against the force of nature?!)
  • The other (as I've been advised) is marginal reception typically caused by poorly aligned / slightly faulty aerials (sometimes corroded parts can go unnoticed for a long time before something like this happens).

So I'd check the aerial just to for the peace of mind that everything's hunky dory up there.  Not asking you to go roof-climbing though mind you - get a handy mate / neighbour maybe to help you do what you can but if you experience further reception problems in the future (worth noting that usually unaddressed aerial problems will worsen over time), getting help from an installer might be a good idea.

Hi Alan, thanks for pointing that out & the one on Carterton (first I'd heard about it - have you by any chance contacted the transmission provider to query that Carterton one? thanks again).
