I'm in Christchurch, using a digital TV to pick up Freeview UHF.
Yesterday, Radio NZ National was on channel 50. Today, it isn't.
The TV said "Invalid channel" when powered on. As far as I can see all the other channels are still there, including Canterbury TV on 40, RNZ Concert on 51 and BaseFM on 71 (which I believe are all on the same multiplex as RNZ National?). I've auto-retuned the TV but it's still not there.
RNZ National is still on the EPG, but when I press OK to view, nothing much happens. It looks as if the channel has dropped off the multiplex somehow.
I see the site announcement "Freeview UHF viewers: Please be aware that Radio NZ National (Channel 50) is now a TV channel format not a radio only channel" - but what does that actually mean?

Hi Ross
Radio New Zealand is now a TV channel which still broadcasts the radio NZ National feed but now has images and video for some shows during the day, In order to have Radio NZ National back simply complete a retune on your TV or Set Top Box and make sure you go to Channel 50 on the TV Mode (Not Radio)
Sorry in the confusion of the message and we will clarify that in a new update on the activity feed.
Thanks. On digging deeper I realise I can't get anything from mux K2 on this TV right now. I have another A/V device which is interfering and will have to be moved.
If RNZ National has just moved to mux K2 here in Christchurch, that would explain why it seemed to disappear!
Hi Ross. What sort of A/V device is this? Is it a video sender perhaps?
Yes, it outputs modulated RF. I've now retuned it, and have restored my access to mux K2, including RNZ National.
Thanks Ross. I have heard of a few others having similar problems so perhaps they are caused by something similar.
Hi. I am have had the same problem for the last 1+ month. I have do an auto retune. But with no joy. Channel 50 is still invalid.
What is meant by the comment "...make sure you go to Channel 50 on the TV Mode (Not Radio)". Would understanding that line better help me?
Now that Radio NZ National is transmitting pictures as well as sound, it counts as a TV channel. Some set-top boxes and TVs have a modes for TV and Radio and require you to select the appropriate mode before choosing channel. However, many don't, and just do the right thing.
In other words, if your receiver doesn't have separate buttons for TV and Radio reception, you don't need to worry.
find al jazeera then go into the manual tune menu from that
Is it just RNZ National that is missing or are there others?
Can you receive any of: Al Jazeera (16), TVSN (20), Yes Shop (21), APNA (36) ?
Which region do you live in? Frequencies for manual tuning vary around the country.
See Network Status page for updates.
