Freeview HD (UHF) Reception issues in Saint Johns, Auckland [SOLVED]

Hi:

I live in a pretty "poor" Freeview HD reception area in Saint Johns, Auckland.  Whilst I was able to receive Freeview HD channels in the past (I've asked our landlord to arrange for a TV Aerial guy to come out out and checktune our aerial, and he tuned it to Waiheke Island on vertical reception), I still get patchy signal sometimes - pixellation are common occurance.  On a "good" day, my TV reports signal strength in the range of about 50-55%, but TV was viewable.

However, as of about a week ago, I suddently lost my reception completely - nothing comes up on my TV and HTPC (running MediaPortal TV Server).  My TV just simply reports "Weak or No Signal".

Therefore, I'm wondering what could have gone wrong?  Has any of the Freeview Transmitters had any issues the last few days or any of the frequencies changed?  I've tried retuning my TV but no channels gets picked up.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Kind Regards

Chuck

Hi Chuck

Over the early hours of Monday, there was a change of how EPG data was transmitted, this was compressed for easier accessibility however this shouldn't have affected the reception.

There have been no reported transmission faults in the past week for Waiheke so this is likely to do with the environment around you, have you noticed any activity between you and the Waiheke Transmitter, living in a patchy Freeview HD coverage will usually have a lot of interruptions with the wrong equipment however seeing that a installer has altered the aerial and getting reception through is probably an environmental factor.

Have you tried Freeview without connection to the HTPC and trying it on your TV? or vise versa?

Hi Joshua:

Firstly, thank you very much for your mesage, and a very detailed explanation of the recent network changes and status.

I forgot to mention that the signal from my UHF antenna gets fed into both my Samsung TV as well as my HTPC. When the installer came around the last time, he added a masthead amplifier when he changed the position of the antenna to point towards Waiheke Island. I further added another amplified splitter to split the single source to 2 outputs. I realised I could be amplifying a poor signal, but I find this setup works for me - it is not great (I reckon it is due to where I live being in a poor signal reception area).

In any case I did a bit of mucking around today and managed to isolate the fault to the amplifier/splitter. I have since returned it to the retailer and managed to get an exchange on it, installed it at my setup and now my Freeview HD signal is back. Thanks must go out to DSE for agreeing to exchange the product, no questions asked, about 9 months after I purchased it.

And thank you again Joshue for taking the time to reply to my query.

Cheers
Chuck

Thanks for the update Chuck, glad you got the issue sorted in the end!

Joshua
