Transferring Recorded Programmes from DishTV Hard Drive to USB External Flash Drive or Hard Drive

Hi, I am wanting to free up space on my Dish TV Hard Drives - Models S7090 (Sat box) & T1050 (Aerial box).

I have been getting conflicting information on what usb devices to use eg Flash Drives (8GB) or Hard Drives (250GB - 1TB) to transfer recorded tv programmes onto.

I don't want to buy a large storage device that is just going to end up having a lot of space sitting there doing nothing and be a waste of money.

I tried a Lexar 8GB flash drive formatted to FAT32, but both boxes told me that the Device is Unavailable. And I don't think 8GB would be big enough anyway to store movies on?

But would external hard drives, 250GB to 500GB?  end up being too big?

Help :-)  I'm just getting confused :-)

I'd go for the external HDD. They are likely to be on special now for the Easter sales. You can usually find a 2Tb external drive for under $130. HD recordings use a lot of space and Flash Drives just aren't big enough. I find on my recorder that one HD movie can take up about 10 - 13gb including the ads. Won't fit on 8gb flash drive even after editing out the ads. I transfer my recordings to my PC, edit out the ads, then store on external USB HDD.

Thanks biggles ... I was told that a 2TB external drive wouldn't work on a Dish tv box because it is too big for the system to cope with.

I don't know about that. Would have to read the manual to find out. You could always ask DishTV customer service? No problem on a Panasonic Recorder or my PC.
