Hi Forum,

I see live streaming is possible over the internet with devices like the Dish TV SmartVU X which is just an Android TV device. Since this is the case, why can't we get the Freeview app for Sony TVs running Android TV? For SONY TV's, it seems you can only get Freeview over UHF but not via an app.

I have a family member in this scenario and seems weird that they have to buy an external android TV device to plug into their Android TV to get this one app.

Regards

Matt

This is a good question which I would like to know the answer to also.

Hey Matt,  the Dish TV SmartVU X is currently the only approved device for the Freeview Android TV app.  Freeview is scoping out ways to extend that app onto other Android-based TVs, but that’s still in the early stages and would be subject to agreements with content providers contributing to the app as well as with device manufacturers.

The SmartVU plug-in is definitely a gadget worth having though if you want to stream Freeview channels, and it delivers plenty of value considering its tiny size and price tag.  It also gives you access to Freeview On Demand, and because it’s essentially an “open” system (unlike most TVs), you can cherry-pick from all the top streaming apps under the sun and download pretty much any other Android TV apps you might want (even games like crossy road :) if you feel like it).

Thanks Bel, I have picked up the SmartVU X to use. Hopefully the native support comes down the line for other Android devices.

Regards

Matt
