Hi

I have Sky currently.  I don't have a satellite box yet. I have a USB hard drive available. I have looked at many boxes on trademe but have no idea what to look for. Upgrading to a hybrid TV is a possibility.

I am off grid and one of the concerns with the sky box is the 24/7 power consumption of 25w, even in standby. Would a hybrid use less overall power? Can you still record? What about if the TV is in standby?

Thanks

25w when in standby seems ridiculously high to me. I'd check with Sky that that is correct or get hold of a Power Monitor Meter and check it's actual power.

Just a quick check in the manual of one of the DishTV boxes shows a maximum power of 2Ow but  doesn't specify standby power. Most units in standby would be using an insignificant amount of power. Just looking at a TV manual at random (Panasonic) shows max power around 60w and standby around 0.3w. My Panasonic Recorder has standby power of 0.2w with 'Power Save in Stdby' activated' and 5w if 'Power Save in Stdby' is not activated.

Standby power on anything electronic should be fairly negligible and only becomes a problem when you have lots of electronics in a house. Basically the only thing running in standby is a clock.

I used a power meter to get the figure. I have seen it confirmed by others online. A sky box doesn't truly go into standby. It needs to track and record while in standby. The hard drive never seems to stop spinning

My new Sky Box didn't because I wouldn't pay another $15/mth for the privilege of recording. Another good reason why I dumped Sky.

I think you can actually turn off the HDD and continual recording in Tech's Menu.

Only sure way to save power is turn it off at the wall but of course it won't wake up for recording them.

You should be pretty safe for very low power stdby with anything other than Sky Boxes.
