Hi there - we have an LG 43LF5900 smart tv with built in on demand TVNZ app.
Often when we try to watch a show with the app the sound will stop working. When we exit the app to live TV the sound is still not working. The only thing that will bring back the sounds for live tv is to reboot the TV. After this however the on demand app still has no sound.
Is this an issue you have heard of before and is there a fix? The TV is up to date with it's software. I have contacted LG and they seem to think it is a problem with the software as other applications work fine.
Hoping you can help!
Regards
Bryan

Hi Bryan

You might need to contact TVNZ directly which you can do so here: https://www.tvnz.co.nz/content/tvnz/ondemand/help/contact-us.html

They will be able to troubleshoot and help sort out the issues with sound on the LG TV. If they find that the issue is on their side then they can usually sort this out and make adjustments. So far no one else has reported issues with the LG brand of TVS

I hope this info helps!

Regards, Josh

Hi Bryan I have just bought the same TV and have experienced the same problem - loss of sound completely or fluctuating/crackling sound on both TVNZ and TV3NOW. I have not contacted anyone regarding this but was interested to see your blog on a Google search. I had experienced some picture breakup, particularly on transitions, a few days ago (only got the TV last week). However, when I checked the service this morning there was no problem at all with the ON Demand viewing. I did not try watching anything on 'Viewster' for example (an 'app' on the TV) so I don't know if the problem you and I are experiencing is limited to the local service i.e. TVNZ and TV3. I did reeboot my router this morning so that might have helped - not sure - more testing needed when the fault reappears. Keep in touch as I am keen to resolve this issue. You can bet that everyone will be pointing the finger an each other.

So here is an update: Got in to TVNZ OnDemand app, attempted to load an episode of once upon A time and got the message " problem loading this show - try another one" or words to that effect. Tried the next episode and it froze. It also crashed the live TV so although the web browser worked fine, I had to turn the TV off and back on again to get ANY TV Live or On Demand. Not encouraging. Something is VERY flaky. Ideas?

My tv was from Harvey Normans so I contacted them and they sent the repair company to pick it up. Currently waiting for a new motherboard. However I think it is most likely software related, and TVNZ on demand say they are aware of these issues and a fix is in the pipeline. I told this to the repair company and they said we should cover all bases being as the tv is still under warranty. When I get it back I'll let you know if it's fixed.

Sounds like a long-shot Bryan but let us know if it makes a difference. It's a bit disconcerting that the app is killing the sound on live tv as well but I guess they are all interrelated. I tried 'Viewster' at about the same time as the OD app was causing the sound to crackle and fluctuate, and their material ran fine. Keep us posted. I have lodged a query with Freeview customer service to see what they say to me.

yes i concurr - the engineer said that the fact that the app was affecting the sounds on live tv might indicate a hardware issue. I reckon they are just doing it to get paid for the work!

After a conversation with the retailer I have been offered a replacement or refund. I think I will go with the refund as I have an uneasy feeling about this TV. Plus the sound quality (when working) is abysmal.

Mind if I ask who the retailer was?

JB HiFi. After sending emails/queries to Freeview, TVNZ and TV3, and receivent no reply from the  latter two and a "not our problem" from Freeview I have kicked the LG into touch. I did not even bother asking LG as after a week -  4 phonecalls and two emails, I have had no resolution to my question "how do I access Virtual Surround Sound?". Looking at a Sony 40" Smart/Android tv instead. Still let us know if the board swap fixes the problem please.

ok so the tv is back with a replaced motherboard and wifi module. So far so good, tested tv nz on demand and it was working fine with no sounds problems.

However it is early days and I have yet to attempt to watch a full program. It could well start having problems again as I remember originally being able to watch about half a program before the issues started.

It is also possible that the error was fixed in a firmware/software update in the last couple of weeks whilst the tv was in for repair. I suggest you update to the latest version and test again

Thanks Bryan. I have returned the tv and got a full refund. I am now considering the Sony Bravia 43W800C, which may well have its own set of issues. It is, at least, and Android TV so that may be an improvement on the WebOS on the LG. The problem I was experiencing occurred up till last Friday when I took the set back so unless an update has come out in the last few days, I had the latest version. No-one wanted to accept responsibility for the problem and I did not even bother asking LG, who have still not offered a resolution to some questions I asked them over two weeks ago regarding 'dual mono' and how to access 'Surround sound plus'. Useless.

So a latest update to this - the tv never quite worked right even after the motherboard replacement, we still had sound issues, so just before xmas we decided we'd had enough and wanted it sorted for good or a refund. LG said that they had to replace the motherboard again which they did (despite me telling them not to waste their time!) and lo and behold the problem still continued.

So Harvey Norman agreed to credit or refund us.

We now have a pansonic smart tv as recommnded to us by the repair company. fingers crossed for this one.

The annoying thing about this all was LG's attitude, that it was an entry level tv so we couldn't expect all the functions to work properly!
