Will Freeview work with only a SKY aerial and an old Sony LCD TV?

I've just moved into a new house that only has a SKY dish on the roof. I've brought with me my old Sony LCD TV which has Freeview built-in and which I purchased in 2010.

When I plug the SKY aerial cable into my TV and auto-run the digital channel set-up, the TV doesn't pick up any channels.

Will I need a Freeview set top box to receive Freeview? Are there any newer TVs with Freeview built-in that will work with only the SKY dish?

Thank you.

Your TV won't work on a Dish antenna. It has a UHF tuner so needs a UHF antenna.

Yes there are new TVs (Samsung and Panasonic I believe)  that have both Sat and UHF Tuners. You just need to shop around.

You could also get a Sat Freeview box which would work on the Sky Dish antenna.

However UHF is HD and Sat is SD picture standard so UHF is the best way to go.

Hi Leon,

Biggles is on to it! Most major brand TV's like Samsung, Sony, LG, Panasonic will have what is called a "Dual-Tuner" feature which means you can hook up a satellite dish or UHF aerial (or even both if you live in a coverage area) without the need of the box.

The only thing to note from your post, is that a Satellite Dish will not work with a UHF only TV,  good rule of thumb is if the TV or device has a twisty connection and not a simple aerial plug in then it will work with your dish

I hope the info helped :)

Josh

Excellent, many thanks Biggles and Josh, much appreciated.
