Thanks to forum input we have isolated our freeview and tuning issues to be due to the Combiner on the mast and the VCR Modulator loop. Both have been removed and all 100%. Setup is now a direct cable from SKY Dish to SKY box and SCART to one NON-Freeview TV. The UHF cable is now a separate feed into a splitter to two rooms. Room one has a new freeview TV and signal strength/quality is 100%.   Question .... the older sky decoder has a UHF IN/OUT loop. I have temporarily moved the UHF aerial cable to the UHF in and connected a spare short cable to the UHF OUT and into the splitter instead of direct. All OK. Can the freeview TV in room 1 be tuned to the UHF loop feed channel on the SKY decoder.? and see the current sky channel? ..... I checked the SKY decoder setup and the UHF out is currently tuned to channel 38 but can change it.

Answer: 

Yes, as long as you tune your TV into the right RF frequency that is modulated out from the SKY Box you can view the same SKY Channel in your room. If you change the RF from your SKY Box menu you will need to retune your other TV to the new RF Output.

Just remember that the Sky rf modulator out is analogue and not digital. Moving the Sky modulator frequency up above CH38 or below CH27 will keep it well away from the broadcast channels in Auckland which are 28 - 37. Down around 26 or below would be best. Also remember that rf output from the Sky box will give worst possible picture. Would be better if you could run composite AV cables to the other TV for a reasonable quality picture.

P.S. Well done for sorting it out. When you have problems it's always a good idea to disconnect everything and start from scratch with the antenna direct to TV then add other connections and equipment testing at each stage til you find the problem.

Thanks Bigs ... spot on .. Although I tried to manually tune both Analog and Digital menus on the TV , I didn't wait long enough on the analog tuning .. it takes a while to find the channel .. all good now. As you say the picture is not great , but it will do for the other room. I reset the channel to 42 from the original setup of 38 by the sky tech. One further question though - since I incorporated the Sky UHF loop on 38 to achieve this (rather than direct from UHF aerial) , the Prime, Sommet channel group has started pixelating again. Will moving it to 42 improve this ? - is it the modulator issue like with the VCR? -  or will I have to forget this option and go back to direct feed .... All the feedback about the Prime group channels must be justified as everyone has similar issues with the signal quality.

Hopefully moving the modulator higher in frequency will solve the pixellating problem but no guarantee. Depends on what the output strength is from the modulator vs received signal strength from Freeview. Personally I'd disable the modulator and run Component or Composite cables rather than rf.  rf modulators are really going to cause problems for Freeview reception so should be avoided like the plague. Basically you have reintroduced the VCR loop problem but not as badly. Best fix is upgrade to MySky and possibly Multiroom (i.e. replace the old decoder with a new one)but expensive.

P.S. Prime is in SD only, not HD, so doesn't matter if you watch via UHF or Satellite, it will always be an inferior picture.

would be wise to move the sky box modulator to below ch 25 as ch 42 frequency is availble for new broadcasters
