Hi, all! Yesterday I tried to connect Freeview using the indoor digital antenna.  Landlord watches China TV through sattelite.  When searching for channels, Freeview shows the message "Database is empty".  Does this mean I am not getting any signal with the indoor antenna?  Thank you.

Probably. Indoor antennae are pretty much useless unless you are near the Transmitter. If you can't see the Tx through your window then it's unlikely to work. Digital reception generally  requires a UHF antenna on the roof. You can check your likely coverage here. You can also check signal strength in your STB's tuning menu.

Hi, are you sure that your freeview box is a UHF one? The message "database empty" sounds like the message that a Satellite freeview box would give.

What is the make and model of the receiver?

I did have the same thought as UHF STB usually say "No Signal"

I asked for the aerial Freeview and in the instruction it shows how to connect it to the aerial.  I live with flatmates and chinese landlord doesn't watch local TV, only China TV through the dish. But there is an aerial on the roof. Will try and connect TV with roof top aerial today.  We might be obstracted by the brewery.   My room faces West and there might be no signal at all.

Seems Noel & Leeming people had no clue what they sold me - it was satellite box. Bought the right one this time, reception is not great and don't know how to change channels.  :-) Technologically challenged.

OK. Thought it must have been a satellite box. As usual very few  sales staff these days don't have much technical knowledge of what they are selling.

Check that the antenna on the roof is UHF. Once the set has scanned all channels just use the remote for changing channels. A lot of pixellation and dropouts indicates antenna problems.

"just use the remote for changing channels" - When I try to change channels I het a message Invalid input. What a pain! I am using an indoor antenna as it will cost too much to connect me with the antenna on the roof.  Landlord doesn't care - he watches Chinese TV through the dish and not going to pay for the installation.  I am flatting and I measured today - the length of the cable I'll need - 12 metres.

Strange that the remote won't change the channels. Do the other functions on the remote work OK? "Invalid input" usually happens when trying to select an incorrect channel. Should be 1 for TV 1, 2 for TV 2 etc. The channel will take a few seconds to change after pressing the button.

I am using an indoor antenna.  I get no TV 1, TV 2, no Prime, TV 3 workks.  What a pain... Who needs that?  I am a student and can not afford to get a technician.

OK. Then you are only receving one of the three muxes (frequencies). That will be why you get the 'Invalid input' message on screen. You may be able to improve reception by moving the antenna about until you find a better location. Watch the signal strength indicator in your manual tuning menu while you do it until you get maximum strength. Otherwise an outside antenna is your only option. Dick Smith have this antenna pack but it's expensive at the moment. They usually have it for about $50 when on sale and I have seen it as low as $40. Keep checking their website for their sales.
